These projects are intended to set new standards and are located in Denmark and America.

Since September, “HyBalance,” a pilot site for CO2-free hydrogen production, has been operational in Hobro, Denmark. This facility utilizes electrolysis technology, enabling grid balancing and the storage of surplus electricity in the form of hydrogen, which is used in industry and transport. Launched in 2016, this project is led by Air Liquide with funding from the European public-private partnership Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) and support from the Danish Energy Agency’s Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP).

Air Liquide USA has also announced the construction of the world’s first liquid hydrogen production unit focused on hydrogen energy markets in the western United States. To this end, a long-term agreement was signed with FirstElement Fuel Inc (FEF), a leading provider of hydrogen retail infrastructure in the US, to supply hydrogen to FEF’s fueling stations in California. These new commitments address the growing needs of the hydrogen mobility market in California, helping to enable and complement the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles and supporting the commercial hydrogen market nationwide.

According to its own statements, Air Liquide anticipates an investment of over 150 million US dollars for the construction of the plant. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2019. The facility will have a capacity of nearly 30 tons of hydrogen per day—an amount capable of powering 35,000 fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Through this investment, Air Liquide will enable the large-scale deployment of hydrogen mobility on the West Coast and provide a reliable supply solution for the 40,000 FCEVs expected to be in use in the state of California by 2022. The plant will also support other fuel cell vehicle and transport markets in the region, such as material handling, forklifts, and heavy-duty transport.

Further information on the projects is available on the Air Liquide blog here.

Photo: flickr / Morten Holm

Air Liquide, a member of h2-netzwerk-ruhr, is currently operating two large-scale projects in hydrogen production for the energy transition.
