{"id":3529,"date":"2021-09-10T16:41:01","date_gmt":"2021-09-10T14:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/h2-netzwerk-ruhr.de\/the-future-of-the-region-lies-in-hydrogen\/"},"modified":"2026-08-03T07:30:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T05:30:19","slug":"the-future-of-the-region-lies-in-hydrogen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/h2-netzwerk-ruhr.de\/en\/the-future-of-the-region-lies-in-hydrogen\/","title":{"rendered":"The Future of the Region Lies in Hydrogen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Member of the Bundestag Irene Mihalic Visits h2-netzwerk-ruhr<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together with\nrepresentatives of the DGB and the IHK, Volker Lindner welcomed Member of the Bundestag\nDr. Irene Mihalic on September 8, 2021, at the H2Herten Application Center.\nAlthough Ms. Mihalic is primarily engaged in domestic policy, the\neconomic future of the Ruhr region is particularly close to her heart. &#8220;As\na Gelsenkirchen native, I naturally want to know where the future of our region\nlies.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The topic of hydrogen and its\nsignificance for the energy transition and climate protection was not new to her. &#8220;Hydrogen\nwill have its greatest impact on climate protection when deployed in\nindustry,&#8221; she explained, and met with this statement with\nunanimous approval from network chairman Volker Lindner, Lars Baumg\u00fcrtel,\nVice President\nof the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) Nord Westfalen, and Dr. Jochen Gr\u00fctters, Deputy\nManaging Director of IHK Nord Westfalen and Head of the IHK\nEmscher-Lippe location. Baumg\u00fcrtel emphasized that particularly the market for\nindustrial process heat, which is responsible for 126 million tons of CO2 annually,\nmust become carbon-free. This will only be achieved through the large-scale deployment of\nhydrogen.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volker Lindner drew attention\nto the fact that there is above all a lack of sufficient quantities of renewable electricity.\nThe future federal government must massively accelerate the expansion of wind and\nsolar energy. And from the year 2030 onwards,\nelectrolysis capacities of 250 gigawatts annually will be needed. To this end, the\nh2-netzwerk-ruhr has initiated a project proposal for a research center for the\nfurther development of electrolysis technology. Under the title\n&#8220;Hydrogen Laboratory Ruhr,&#8221; industry together with partners from the\nuniversity landscape will increase the efficiency of electrolysis.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with increased utilization of the\nwind and solar energy available in Germany, there will be no way around\nimporting hydrogen in the long term. Sun-rich countries, for example in the Arab region,\nare already preparing to switch from oil and gas to hydrogen production.\n <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was important to Dr. Mihalic to point out\nthat the energy transition also includes the other side of the coin:\n&#8220;We must also reduce energy consumption in Germany. The question is: How\ndo we achieve more efficiency in the consumer market?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incidentally, vocational training also plays a crucial role in building a hydrogen-based economy. Here, Tobias Krupp from DGB Emscher-Lippe sees a key to the successful establishment of electrolysis and fuel cell technology. For Irene Mihalic, this should not be the last visit to h2-netzwerk-ruhr.
