Twenty-seven participants were welcomed to the second online members\u2019 evening held on December 1 by Volker Lindner,\nChairman of h2-netzwerk-ruhr e.V., and Carsten Stabenau, Head of\nInnovation Management at Westnetz GmbH. The meeting had originally been scheduled to take place at\nWestnetz\u2019s headquarters in Dortmund, but in view of the\ncurrent COVID situation, the organisers opted for a digital\nformat, which did not detract from the evening\u2019s success.\n <\/p>\n\n
Volker Lindner was pleased to have welcomed the network\u2019s 61st member\nand announced that in the coming year the network would focus even more strongly\non the needs and wishes of its members. To this end,\nan individual member survey will be carried out with support from the new network manager, Dr D\u00e9sir\u00e9e Schulte.\nIn addition, communication\nwith members is to be improved, for example by introducing a\ndigital \u201cnoticeboard\u201d. <\/p>\n\n
Afterwards, Carsten Stabenau, as virtual host, introduced\nthe evening\u2019s thematic content. Westnetz, as one of Germany\u2019s largest\ngas grid operators, assumes that its pipeline network will have to be carbon-free by\n2045. He presented considerations for increasing the\nuse of biomethane and explained that, for the production of CH4\nby adding CO2 to hydrogen, the phase-out of major CO2 emitters means there is only limited potential\nremaining. He then presented the\nKaiseresch project, a district with a high proportion of commercial activity, which is one of Westnetz\u2019s three\nreal-world laboratories. According to him, the central project objective is \u201cthe\ndevelopment of a modular blueprint for a decentralised energy and\nheat transition at district level.\u201d A hydrogen-based network of\nsupply lines ensures a CO2-free energy supply and demonstrates the\nentire value chain from locally produced green electricity to\nhydrogen end applications across all energy sectors. <\/p>\n\n
This was followed by a presentation of the \u201cSmart\nFacility\u201d in Metelen. There, Westnetz has built a hydrogen-based, largely grid-independent energy supply\nby installing\nsolar modules, an electrolyser, a hydrogen storage system and fuel cells\n. \u201cWith this plant, we will achieve a self-sufficiency rate of 91%\n,\u201d explained project manager Jens Kleine-Vennekate. The hydrogen produced on site\nalso powers two electric bicycles, which have a fuel cell for energy supply\n. <\/p>\n\n
The two presentations prompted numerous questions and a lively discussion. Clearly, the topic was so fascinating that no one minded the meeting running over time. The next members\u2019 evening will be hosted by the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT in Oberhausen. Whether it will be held in person or online will be decided according to the pandemic situation at that time. <\/p>\n\n
