It is now undisputed among experts that hydrogen will play a key role in the energy transition. It is required not only as a storage medium for surplus renewable energy but, above all, as a raw material for industry. Refineries, chemical industries, and steelworks will hardly be able to significantly improve their carbon footprint without the massive use of hydrogen. Consequently, policymakers at all levels are increasingly addressing this issue.

The great interest in hydrogen was evident from the numerous invitations the network received for presentations, as well as visits from external guests, e.g., to the H2 Application Center Herten.
A growth in membership for h2-netzwerk-ruhr of nearly 20% to 45 members in 2019 alone shows that more and more stakeholders in the Ruhr metropolitan region consider networking necessary and sensible to be economically and politically successful in building the hydrogen industry.
Volker Lindner highlighted the opening of three additional hydrogen filling stations in the Ruhr area as a highlight of 2019: Essen, Duisburg, and Herten went online during the year. Incidentally, according to observations by network staff working on-site, the Herten station is being used frequently.

Among the prominent events in the second half of the year was, above all, the Emscher-Lippe Summit at the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences in Gelsenkirchen. There, the topic of “hydrogen” as a driver of industrial development was so dominant that more than half of the over 100 participants from business and administration took part in the corresponding H2 workshop. One result of the summit was the establishment of a steering committee by District President Dorothee Feller, which has since met regularly under her leadership to advance current projects and evaluate new project ideas for feasibility and support options. Successful project initiations certainly include the selection of the Emscher-Lippe region in the federal “HyExperts” tender, which brings a total of €300,000 into the region to promote the topic of hydrogen here.

Currently, h2-netzwerk-ruhr, the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences, and WiN Emscher-Lippe have participated in the “WIR – Change through Innovation in the Region” tender by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It aims to explore the opportunities for industrial production of large-scale electrolyzers in the Ruhr area. This application was explicitly supported by renowned industrial companies (including Siemens and Evonik) as well as the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB).

The advisory board meeting of h2-netzwerk-ruhr on November 4, 2019, at the IHK in Gelsenkirchen was characterized by a series of high-profile technical presentations dealing with the role of hydrogen in the energy transition.

Under the title “HyNoon,” the network offers seminars on fuel cell technology to schools in the region. A set of cases is used, each containing a kit for a hydrogen-powered model vehicle. This offer was taken up twelve times in 2019.

However, the prerequisite for the expected triumph of “green hydrogen” (i.e., hydrogen produced using renewable energies) is a change in the regulatory framework: To this end, h2-netzwerk-ruhr has developed a position paper that can be accessed on the network’s website. This paper is being sent to the region’s representatives, along with a request to support the implementation of these ideas.

For 2020, h2-netzwerk-ruhr has set the goal of taking the Ruhr metropolis a major step forward on its way to becoming one of the leading hydrogen regions in Europe, together with regional policymakers and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Note to editors:

Further information on the activities of h2-netzwerk-ruhr e.V. can be found on the website www.h2-netzwerk-ruhr.de or by telephone via the office (02366-188 971) or the press officer Peter Brautmeier (0151 5362 4433).

Photo: flickr / trendingtopics, License here

At the regular board meeting of h2-netzwerk-ruhr at the WiN Emscher-Lippe building in Herten, Chairman Volker Lindner presented an impressive balance sheet for 2019.
