On July 8, 2020, the EU Commission published its\nHydrogen Strategy for 2050. In it, the Commission aims for an\nincrease in the share of H2 in the European energy mix from the current 2% to\n13-14%. For the necessary expansion of generation capacities, the\nEU Commission has stated that it is focusing on the climate-neutral production of hydrogen\nusing electrolysers powered by renewable energies. <\/p>\n\n
By\n2024, the installed capacity of electrolysers in Europe is to be increased by at least\nsix gigawatts. In this phase, the production of\nelectrolysers \u2013 including large ones with a capacity of 100 megawatts \u2013 must be significantly\nramped up. <\/p>\n\n
In the\nsecond phase, which the EU sets from 2025 \u2013 2030, hydrogen is to become an\nessential component of an integrated energy system. The amount of\nhydrogen provided with the help of an electrolysis capacity of at least 40 gigawatts\nis to reach 10 million tons annually by 2030. \n<\/p>\n\n
In the third\nphase, from 2030 to 2050, hydrogen production should have reached a level of maturity\nthat allows for large-scale deployment, for example in\nthe steel and chemical industries, which could not be decarbonized to the\nrequired extent without H2 use.<\/p>\n\n
The\nEU Commission estimates that the costs for the production, storage\nand transport of hydrogen will amount to 180 \u2013\n470 billion Euros by 2050.<\/p>\n\n
In its\nstrategy paper, the EU Commission describes the framework conditions for the\nsuccess of this strategy, ranging from increasing demand to\nraising production capacities and the logistics of storing and\ndistributing H2 to the end customer.<\/p>\n\n
This requires\nan increase in research activities along the entire\nvalue chain.\n\nTo this end, the EU will distribute billions of Euros in funding\nthrough a variety of individual programs in the coming years.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n
