Cummins Inc. will increasingly invest in fuel cell technology, which the company believes will be of growing importance for powertrains in rail and heavy-duty transport and for stationary power supply applications in the markets it serves. The Herten Technology Development and Asset Management Company (HTVG) is constructing a production, research, and office building with a usable area of 4,300 m² on a 7,700 m² plot in Albert-Einstein-Allee for the company.

The
groundbreaking ceremony took place on November 19, 2020, in the presence of Minister of Transport Hendrik
Wüst. North Rhine-Westphalia is providing a home for new mobility. The establishment of the first series production of emission-free drive systems in Germany shows that Mobility 4.0 is not only conceived and researched here but also becomes tangible. The old colliery site, a symbol of old energy from coal, is now the nucleus for new, emission-free energy. I am pleased that Ewald is looking ahead and working on the mobility of the future.”

For the Hydrogen Competence Center in Ewald, this settlement is an important gain. For a long time, the city of Herten has focused on promoting technology-oriented companies, especially in the field of new energies. The first municipal user center h2herten for hydrogen and fuel cell technology is the nucleus and location for a whole range of companies in this sector. With Hydrogenics, a strong player is joining.

“A Milestone”

“We are very pleased about this construction project. It is a milestone in the city of Herten’s efforts to become a significant location for hydrogen technology,” said Mayor Matthias Müller. City Planning Officer Janine Feldmann, who is also Managing Director of HTVG, added: “The Hydrogenics project is an important building block for the energy and transport transition, as rail vehicles with a fuel cell drive contribute to reducing CO2 emissions in rail transport.” HTVG Co-Managing Director Matthias Steck explained: “The settlement is also the result of our long-standing efforts to attract technology-oriented companies.” The key to success lies in the comprehensive offer of space, consulting, networking, and support, and the close exchange with business and science.

Hydrogenics GmbH, now part of Cummins, has been located in the Gladbeck-Wiesenbusch Technology Center since 2005 as a subsidiary of Canadian Hydrogenics Corporation and is a manufacturer and developer of fuel cells and hydrogen generators. Since September 2019, Hydrogenics has been part of Cummins Inc. (USA). The French gas producer Air Liquide holds a minority stake. Cummins is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of power generation equipment with approximately 61,600 employees and is heavily involved in alternative drive systems, including the production of battery electric, fuel cells, and hydrogen.

“Supporting Customers in Europe”

“The decision to open this new fuel cell systems site in Herten, Germany, is a testament to Cummins’ commitment to accelerating the expansion of our hydrogen capabilities. This facility will better enable us to support customers in Europe and strategically strengthen our position as a leader in shaping tomorrow’s hydrogen economy,” said Amy Davis, President of New Power at Cummins.

In Herten, as part of an operational expansion, the first step involves setting up assembly, a test center, and a research and development area for railway fuel cell systems. These fuel cell systems are manufactured specifically for the Alstom Group. The systems are assembled ready for operation and tested on special test benches before being delivered to the customer. By the end of 2021, this will create an additional fifty highly qualified jobs in a future-oriented industry in Ewald. Herten will be the location for the first series production of emission-free drive systems in Germany.

Cover photo: The photo of the groundbreaking ceremony shows (from left to right): Frank Steffens, Managing Director of Brüninghoff construction company; Christopher Naujoks, architect; Dr. Bernd Pitschak, Managing Director of Hydrogenics GmbH; Bodo Klimpel, District Administrator; Hendrik Wüst, NRW Minister of Transport; Janine Feldmann, Managing Director of HTVG; Carsten Löcker MdL; Matthias Müller, Mayor of the City of Herten.
