With the involvement of h2-netzwerk-ruhr, the topic of hydrogen was addressed at Ostvest Vocational College on 26\/10\/2022. Headteacher Juliane Br\u00fcggemann had invited people to the “Datteln Forum”<\/strong> \u2013 members of the school community as well as interested citizens from Datteln and the region had the opportunity to learn about renewable energies. <\/p>\n\n To this end, expertise had been brought in. Volker Lindner and Peter Brautmeier from h2-netzwerk-ruhr provided the impetus, taking a position in competent presentations and as part of a panel discussion chaired by Klaus Beie. <\/p>\n\n Brautmeier and Lindner are convinced that the energy transition cannot be achieved without hydrogen<\/strong>. At first glance, it may seem that hydrogen is a bridging technology. “The technology will remain with us in the more distant future as well, and will probably even be expanded further. The more green electricity we have available, the more extensively we will convert it into hydrogen in order to supply the energy system and industry flexibly and securely,” says Lindner. This is because only the use of “green” hydrogen makes the energy transition possible in some industrial sectors. In the medium term, hydrogen can replace coking coal in the steel industry<\/strong>. The City of Herten, where Volker Lindner was Director of Urban Development and Peter Brautmeier was Head of Economic Development, is leading the way. Fuel cells are manufactured here, and refuse collection vehicles and buses also run on the “energy carrier of the future”. <\/p>\n\n Following the keynote presentation by the hydrogen experts, the education experts had their say as part of a panel discussion, during which questions from the audience were also answered. Dr Daniel Kobe and Dr Lars Thyssen from Ostvest Vocational College explored the question of what a vocational school will face if the energy transition is to be achieved. It is clear that digitalisation will also play a key role here. However, it seems foreseeable that, at least in connection with hydrogen, no special specialist qualifications<\/strong> will be required; rather, established apprenticeships<\/strong> such as mechatronics engineers, plant mechanics and measurement and control technicians will have to adapt to the new technologies<\/strong>. In particular, safety aspects of hydrogen use<\/strong> must be incorporated into current curricula. <\/p>\n\n A “Renewable Energies” competence centre<\/strong> is to be established on the vocational college campus, in which the topic of hydrogen will also play a role.
