A well-attended conference titled “Hydrogen Transfer Congress \u2013 Highlights from the Real-World Laboratories”<\/strong> took place on April 18, 2023 in Berlin. The chairman of the h2-netzwerk-ruhr, Volker Lindner, also participated. <\/p>\n\n

Background<\/h3>\n\n

The background of the conference was the competition of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy<\/strong> held in 2019. From this competition, 20 “Real-World Laboratories”<\/strong> were designated at the time, which are intended to systematically realize, test, and demonstrate both hydrogen production and hydrogen applications, and were funded by the federal government for this purpose. At this conference, eight of the funded projects reported on the status and initial results of the accompanying research. <\/p>\n\n

External Constraints Slow Project Progress<\/h3>\n\n

Assuming that these reports presented the most successful real-world laboratories to date, the result was sobering<\/strong>: none of the projects had truly left the planning phase. At best, permits had been granted or electrolyzers or similar core components had been ordered. However, the commitment of those involved is clearly not the issue. <\/p>\n\n

The waiting for decisions<\/strong> on regulation such as RED II, approval procedures<\/strong>, and clarification of subsidy issues has so far held back the projects. With initial procurements, further problems become apparent: insufficient manufacturing capacities<\/strong> of the manufacturers and, consequently, long delivery times<\/strong>.
