These research capacities are complemented by the activities of internationally renowned research institutions, such as the Fraunhofer, Leibniz, or Max Planck Institutes. In addition to basic research, this dense network also covers all related fields: from hydrogen distribution to the development of practical applications.

Energy Institute of the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences Gelsenkirchen

The Energy Institute of the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences Gelsenkirchen (then: Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences) was founded back in 2001, engaging interdisciplinarily with the future topic of hydrogen. To address the broad spectrum of energy topics interdisciplinarily, the departments of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Supply and Disposal joined forces.

The Energy Institute serves as a partner and hub for collaboration between science and industry. The objective of the work in Gelsenkirchen is to optimize modern energy systems while considering resource-efficient energy use. In this context, hydrogen technology plays a central role.

Center for Fuel Cell Technology (ZBT)

The Center for Fuel Cell Technology (ZBT) in Duisburg is another renowned institution within the international research landscape of the Ruhr region. The Duisburg institute is located directly on the university campus and has been continuously expanded and its activities broadened since its founding in 2001. Most recently, the technical center for manufacturing technology and testing was opened at ZBT in 2008. Over 70 employees are now dedicated holistically to the topic of fuel cells across all relevant research areas.

High Research Density in the Ruhr Region’s Educational Hub Within Europe’s most concentrated university landscape, working groups in the field of fuel cell and hydrogen technology are active at the university locations of Bochum, Dortmund, Essen, and Duisburg, as well as at the three universities of applied sciences in Dortmund, Bochum, and Gelsenkirchen.
