Carbon dioxide generated during steel production can replace crude oil as a feedstock in the chemical industry when renewable energy is used. The Carbon2Chem project is launching in Duisburg with the participation of Federal Research Minister Dr Johanna Wanka and NRW Minister for Science Swenja Schulze, and is being funded with just over \u20ac60 million from federal funds. <\/p>\n
The project is investigating the processing of steelworks gases, the material provision of renewable energy in the form of hydrogen, and the conversion of the two into basic chemical feedstocks \u2013 including the corresponding life cycle analyses. The project is led by Fraunhofer UMSICHT, the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, and thyssenkrupp AG. <\/p>\n
