Today, the first event in a new series of student workshops took place at the h2Herten Hydrogen Application Centre, which the h2-network offers together with the zdi Centre MINT.REgio. Fourteen students from the municipal grammar school in Herten were introduced to the topic of hydrogen and its role as an energy carrier and energy storage medium for renewable energy sources during the four-hour programme by our education officer, Thorben M\u00fcller. They learned about the fuel cell as a power generator based on hydrogen or natural gas and electrolysis as a hydrogen producer, and, in small groups using experimental kits, were able to gain practical experience of the basic operating principle and the characterisation of key components. The programme was rounded off by a tour of the Herten energy complementary system with wind power electrolysis, which, together with the local wind turbine, theoretically enables a 100% renewable power supply for the application centre as well as additional hydrogen provision. The complementary system is also available to external customers for scientific investigations.
