“We have set ourselves the goal of building 1,000 hydrogen fuel cells<\/strong> in Herten over the coming year. This is by far the largest series production of fuel cells in Europe<\/strong>,” reports Michael Himmen, Managing Director of the Cummins subsidiary and h2-netzwerk member company<\/strong> Hydrogenics. Starting this summer, another production line<\/strong> will be launched at the Herten site, which was specifically relocated from Canada to Europe and the Ruhr region. As the Managing Director explains, this is where one finds the “key customers” and the “necessary expertise.” <\/p>\n\n Hydrogen fuel cells are important building blocks for the decarbonization of the energy sector and a successful transport transition. In Herten, the Cummins subsidiary Hydrogenics produces H2 fuel cell systems, known as stacks, which are primarily installed in trucks or the hydrogen trains<\/strong> of the company Alstom. Until now, however, the actual fuel cell was supplied from Canada\u2014but that is changing this summer: From now on, Cummins will produce the entire system itself, including the actual fuel cell, at the Herten site. The company plans to manufacture 1,000 new fuel cells here in the coming year<\/strong>. “There is no one in Europe who will build even 100 fuel cells next year,” says Michael Himmen. <\/p>\n\n In 2022, the headquarters and production of Hydrogenics GmbH were relocated from Gladbeck to the Hydrogen Competence Center on the site of the Ewald Colliery<\/strong>. The launch of the new production line now strengthens the city and the region once again\u2014starting with additional jobs. The company also plans changes to the production building and has made massive investments in the local infrastructure. Furthermore, Hydrogenics is already looking for new storage options in the region for the increased production. <\/p>\n\n The current production facility<\/strong> was built in a record-breaking nine months<\/strong> in 2021 by the Herten Technology Development and Asset Management Company (HTVG). It currently has a usable area of 4,300 square meters<\/strong>, its own storage for green hydrogen<\/strong>, as well as extensive safety technology and a modern H2 detection system. <\/p>\n\n The choice of Herten by a company active in 190 countries worldwide seems curious at first. “But on the one hand, Hydrogenics naturally already had a workforce in Gladbeck, i.e., in the region,” explains Michael Himmen. “However, the other essential point in favor of Herten<\/strong> was that the city made it very clear from the start that it had a holistic concept for how to support this location and the construction of this building. This does not primarily mean financial commitment, but rather that the city established a round table where all involved offices, committees, and licensing authorities met once a week\u2014and where things were really moved forward. So if someone tells me that Germany can’t be fast, they should look at this project.
