Project launch: Carbon2Chem

Carbon dioxide generated during steel production can replace crude oil as a feedstock in the chemical industry when renewable energy is used. The Carbon2Chem project is launching in Duisburg with the participation of Federal Research Minister Dr Johanna Wanka and NRW Minister for Science Swenja Schulze, and is being funded with just over €60 million from federal funds.

The project is investigating the processing of steelworks gases, the material provision of renewable energy in the form of hydrogen, and the conversion of the two into basic chemical feedstocks – including the corresponding life cycle analyses. The project is led by Fraunhofer UMSICHT, the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, and thyssenkrupp AG.

One of our network members, the Center for Fuel Cell Technology Duisburg (ZBT), is also represented with electrolysis topics.
