Thomas Kattenstein Provides Outlook on H2 Ramp-Up

General Meeting at TÜV Nord in Essen

At the annual general meeting of h2-netzwerk-ruhr e.V., forty participants gathered on March 19 at the TÜV Nord campus in Essen. Network Chair Thomas Kattenstein works at DMT Energy Engineers, a subsidiary of TÜV Nord.

The CEO of DMT, Dr. Maik Tiedemann, did not miss the opportunity to personally welcome the network’s members. In addition to the usual formalities of a general meeting, there were interesting substantive discussions. These were introduced by the presentation by Dr. Thomas Kattenstein, who addressed in depth the obstacles, but also the bright spots in the hydrogen ramp-up.

There, he welcomed the adoption of the Hydrogen Acceleration Act, but at the same time pointed out that the rigid EU rules on green hydrogen were making it unnecessarily more expensive.

What is always important at these meetings is to have sufficient space for professional exchange. This was used extensively. In one of the discussions, Prof. Brodmann passionately argued that the exclusive preference for battery-electric passenger cars had been a wrong decision and regretted the dismantling of hydrogen refuelling stations.

The network’s next members’ evening will be hosted by the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences in Gelsenkirchen on June 16, 2026. The h2Raum project will also be presented in more detail; it has just secured an expansion of its financial support.
