Fourth Hydrogen Practice Day Provides Insights into Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology

The Hydrogen Practice Day took place for the fourth time at the h2herten Application Center with 120 young people from schools and vocational colleges in the region. The entire day focused on hydrogen and fuel cell technology as well as career opportunities in the energy sector. This year’s Hydrogen Practice Day was once again organized by h2-netzwerk-ruhr, the City of Herten with the h2herten Application Center, and the Hydrogen Coordination of WiN Emscher-Lippe.

How does a car actually run on hydrogen? And how do you refuel with a gas? The students received answers to these questions at the Hydrogen Practice Day.

In addition to the students, Matthias Müller, Mayor of the City of Herten, was also in attendance. “The use of hydrogen is a very important building block for achieving climate goals. Here at the Herten Application Center, it is demonstrated where hydrogen technology is already in use today and how it can be utilized in the future. Skilled trades and industry require well-trained and open-minded young people who are interested in technical or scientific fields during their schooling, training, or studies. I am pleased to meet many of these interested young people here today at the Hydrogen Practice Day,” Matthias Müller is quoted in the Hertener Allgemeine Zeitung, which reported on the Practice Day.

The students learned that many waste collection vehicles are also powered by hydrogen.

The students, aged between 15 and 20 years, were not only shown the Application Center on site as well as the processes by which hydrogen has been produced, stored, and converted back into electricity here since 2013. They also learned how fuel cell vehicles are operated using hydrogen technology and refueled at the hydrogen refueling station. In addition, TÜV Rheinland provided information on safety and chemical processes, and GSI Welding School offered a virtual welding trainer that allowed participants to practice welding virtually.
