“Hydrogen Laboratory Ruhr” Gains Supra-Regional Recognition

Handelsblatt: Ruhr Region Can Assume a Leading Role

In its edition of February 18, 2021, the Handelsblatt reports on the efforts of former coal regions to achieve economic success in the field of hydrogen technologies. In addition to the example of the hydrogen research center that Siemens intends to establish in Görlitz, the Hydrogen Laboratory Ruhr is particularly highlighted. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has incorporated this project of h2-netzwerk-ruhr into its Hydrogen Roadmap.

The Handelsblatt writes verbatim: “… according to a current study, the Ruhr region is very well positioned to play a leading role in establishing the hydrogen economy in Germany.” Companies in the Ruhr metropolitan area have many years of experience with the production, distribution, and application of hydrogen. With a length of 240 kilometers, this region has the longest H2 pipeline network in the Federal Republic. And across all value creation stages of the hydrogen economy, companies here have been able to accumulate many years of experience. Furthermore, the Ruhr region has an excellent research infrastructure. All points that lead the author to the conviction that the Ruhr region can become a “specialist for industrial applications” of hydrogen.
