Hydrogen Region Ruhr
Established hub for energy and future technologies
The Ruhr area is one of Europe’s largest conurbations – and has always been Europe’s number one energy region. Once the continent’s industrial heartland, it is increasingly becoming a hub for future technologies and renewable energy. Expertise in hydrogen technology did not only establish itself here with the energy transition; as a significant chemical industry location, the Ruhr area can already build on a tradition of around 100 years in hydrogen. Now, it is crucial to link this knowledge with new techniques for regenerative power generation – for example, in the production of so-called green hydrogen.
The ideal location conditions also made the Ruhr area one of four EU model regions (the only one in Germany). Whether power plant technology, renewable energies, energy supply, energy technology, or energy conversion – innovations that address the challenges of the future regarding sustainability and efficiency are taking place between the Ruhr and Lippe rivers. No other region is as broadly positioned in this economic sector.
Today, the Ruhr area is a technological, economic, scientific, and cultural center in the heart of Europe. Both globally active corporations and innovative start-up companies invest here, competing for national and international top positions. In the interplay of high-performing universities and leading scientific research institutes, ideas for the future are generated in the Ruhr area.
