Minister Pinkwart presents NRW hydrogen roadmap

Up to 130,000 new jobs are expected

On Monday, November 9, 2020, NRW Minister of Economic Affairs Andreas Pinkwart presented the roadmap for expanding the hydrogen economy in NRW. With this, NRW is setting specific expansion targets for industry, mobility, and energy and infrastructure. Minister Pinkwart assumes that consistent implementation of the hydrogen roadmap can reduce industry greenhouse gas emissions by a quarter and that up to 130,000 new jobs can be created in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Volker Lindner, Chairman of the h2-netzwerk-ruhr e.V., welcomes the state government’s announcement and notes that it is “an important addition to the strategy of the Federal Government, which sets clear targets for NRW .” Lindner hopes that the newly planned pilot projects will also be implemented on a larger scale in the Ruhr region. In this context, he refers to the initiative of the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences, WiN Emscher-Lippe and the h2-netzwerk-ruhr to set up an operational research center for large-scale electrolyzers in the northern Ruhr region; this is explicitly mentioned in the roadmap under the heading “Hydrogen Lab Ruhr” . After all, according to the roadmap, one to three gigawatts of electrolysis capacity are to be established in NRW by 2030.
