Hydrogen refueling station being built at h2herten
First location in the northern Ruhr area
In late summer 2018, the first public refueling station for fuel cell vehicles in the northern Ruhr area will be built at the site of the h2herten hydrogen competence center. With the support of Herten’s economic development agency, the location was included in the regular network planning of H2 MOBILITY Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG.
“We are pleased with H2 MOBILITY’s commitment to building and operating the hydrogen refueling station in Herten, so that emission-free and low-noise hydrogen mobility can develop rapidly in our region,” said Herten’s Mayor Fred Toplak, after receiving the building application from Lorenz Jung, Network Manager at H2 MOBILITY, and Mike Hutmacher, the project manager responsible for Herten. In addition to passenger cars, waste collection vehicles with combined battery-fuel cell drives will be refueled in Herten for the first time nationwide. Concord Blue GmbH has provided part of its property free of charge for the project.
Several sponsors support the project
The refueling technology comes from the gas manufacturer Linde AG. Investment costs for the construction of refueling stations are still high. Therefore, H2 MOBILITY is receiving funding for the construction project from the European Commission as part of the Hydrogen Mobility Europe project in the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (FCH 2 JU, grant agreement no. 671438). Other sponsors include the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP).
400 refueling stations is the goal
H2 MOBILITY Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG is responsible for the nationwide expansion of a hydrogen infrastructure to supply fuel cell vehicles in Germany. The goal is to operate a total of 100 refueling stations in the seven German metropolitan areas. As vehicle numbers increase, up to 400 refueling stations are intended to ensure nationwide coverage. Hydrogen vehicles have ranges of 500 to 700 kilometers. The refueling process takes approximately four minutes and does not differ from conventional vehicle refueling.
Shareholders are Air Liquide, Daimler, Linde, OMV, Shell, and Total. The companies BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, and VW, as well as the National Organisation Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW GmbH), advise H2 MOBILITY as associated partners.
